Indian Met Coke Import Plunges by 9% in FY16

Annual Met coke import to India fell second time in a row. Steel producers are shifting to import of raw material (coking coal); catalyze downfall. Monthly import fell by 76%.

India, amongst the prime purchaser of Chinese Met coke, has imported 3 MnT of Met coke annually; lowest among last three years (SteelMint data). The nation’s monthly import of coke was also the lowest in the last month of the fiscal. SteelMint overviewed that India imported aggregate about 0.08 MnT of material in Mar’16. Import fell by 76% on monthly comparison. Whereas, import from China fell by 96% in a month’s time.

According to SteelMint’s analysis, the total Met coke imported by the country was around 3 MnT for FY16 against FY15. The quantity lessened by 9% Y-o-Y and was assessed at 3.3 MnT in FY’15. Met coke import to the country was assessed at 4.25 MnT in FY14.

Russian coke is available  in the range 140-150 CFR India, depending upon quantity, quality and landed port in India. Whereas, Chinese met coke is assessed around USD 130-132/MT CFR India for 64% CSR.
