Indian Manganese ore production for FY14 stood at 2.4 MnT against production of 2.2 MnT in FY13, according to provisional data released by Ministry of Mines.
Production of Manganese ore in India remain more or less static despite increase in production by MOIL, owing to decrease in overall production with mining restrictions in Karnataka & Odisha.
According to SteelMint’s assessment, out of 2.4 MnT , 50% is produced by MOIL, 35% by private miners like Tata, OMML (Adhunik), Rungta Mines, J K Minerals, SMIORE and few others.
India is the 6th largest producer of Manganese ore after China, South Africa, Australia, Gabon & Brazil. About one-fifth of the world’s Manganese ore are found in India.
Odisha: This state produces about 30% Manganese ore of India. In FY14, it had produced around 0.71 MnT. The major producers are Tata Steel, OM & M and Rungta Mines.
MOIL: The company produces about 50% Manganese ore of India. In FY14, MOIL produced 1.15 MnT. The company had acquired a lease for 600 hectares of land from the Government of Maharashtra and currently undergoing prospecting work. From FY17, there is expected to be a huge jump in MOIL’s production.
Imports: India is the 2nd most important consumer of Manganese ore in the world behind China. In FY14 (Apr-Dec,2013), India had imported 1.58 MnT of Manganese ore. In FY13, total imports stood at 2.36 MnT. South Africa is the largest exporter of Manganese ore to India and the world, accounting for over 35% of Manganese ore exports.
Karnataka: The Sandur Manganese & Iron Ores (SMIORE) is the largest miner in the state. There has been some slay in production of ore in Karnataka. The Central Empowered Committee (CEC) of the Supreme Court has fixed SMIORE’s Manganese ore production capacity to 0.18 MnT pa and would contribute 7.5% of the ore production in India. In FY14 till December, SMIORE had produced 0.05 MnT of Manganese ore and sold through e-auctions.
Other producers are private mining companies located in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, & Andhra Pradesh, accounting to around 13% of total Manganese Ore production in India
