Indian Iron Ore Production down by 7% in Sep’13: Mines Ministry

According to provisional data released by union ministry of mines, Indian iron ore production has come down by 7% in the month on September 2013 against August 2013.

Indian iron ore production down by 7% in September 2013 owing to extended monsoon. Production stood at around 70-71 million tonnes during April 2013 -September 2013.

Indian iron ore production had taken a hit after Supreme Court banned mining in Karnataka and Goa in the year 2011, 2012 respectively. However Supreme Court later lifted the ban in Karnataka and capped production to 30 million tonnes.

Supreme court continued to put ban on iron ore mining in Goa, however allowed to liquidate the piled up stock. Looking at further scenario Iron Ore production likely to stay in the range of 132-134 million tonnes in 2013-2014 against 145 million tonnes in 2012-2013.

NMDC is the largest iron ore producer with an annual production of 27 million tonnes followed by SAIL and Tata.
