Indian iron ore movement up by 6% m-o-m in Nov’20

Iron ore movement (excluding exports) across major producing states of the country was recorded at 11.37 mn t in Nov’20, up 6% m-o-m, as against 10.73 mn t in Oct’20. The figures are compiled on the basis of movements made via railways, trucks, Karnataka and import data as per customs. The figures exclude the captive iron ore movement of JSW (Gonua & Narayanposhi), SAIL & Tata Steel and movement for exports. The figure includes JSW Steel (Jajang & Nuagaon), AMNS, Sarda Mines movement.

State-wise iron ore movement analysis:

  • Dispatches from Chhattisgarh picked up 27% in Nov’20: Iron ore dispatches from Chhattisgarh was recorded at 2.01 mn t iron ore in Nov’20, up by 27% against 1.58 mn t in Oct’20.
  • Odisha iron ore dispatches down 8% in Nov’20: India’s largest iron ore producing state recorded total merchant iron ore dispatches at 6.13 mn t in Nov’20, down 8% against 6.64 mn t in Oct’20. The figures exclude movement for export and dispatches of miners- SAIL, JSW (Gonua & Narayanposhi) & Tata Steel. Odisha may entrust at least three iron ore deposits, that went unauctioned last year, to state -owned PSUs Odisha Mining Corporation and the state’s exploration agency Odisha Mineral Exploration Corporation. This may boost iron ore supplies in the state during the next quarter.
  • Karnataka iron ore e-auction sales fell in Nov’20: The total allotted quantity in Nov’20 was recorded at 1.94 mn t, down 16% compared with 2.3 mn t in Oct’20, as per data compiled with SteelMint. Tighter availability of high grade ore and material lifting issues impacted sales.
  • Indian iron ore imports in Nov’20: Iron ore imports to India for the month of Nov’20 was recorded at 175,222 t. The import vessel was booked by JSW Steel Ltd at 79,540t from Finland and Arcellor Mittal at 95,682t from Ukraine. The imports of iron ore were last witnessed in the month of March’20 at 110,000 t. However, no pellets were imported during the month against 199,671 t in Oct’20.
  • Indian iron ore export volumes picked up in Nov’20: Indian iron ore export shipments increased to 3.91 mn t in Nov’20, up 8% m-o-m as compared to 3.61 mn t in Oct’20, according to vessel line up data maintained with SteelMint. The exports have increased on expectations of firm steel production and Chinese iron ore restocking demand. Also, increase in global iron ore fines prices favored exports. Monthly average global iron ore fines (Fe 62%) price increased to $124/t CFR China in Nov’20 as against $120/t CFR China in Oct’20.
  • 1.11 mn t iron ore sold via Goa auction – Goan govt. organised 24th iron ore e-auction on 10th Nov’20. Out of 3 mn t iron ore put under hammer only 37% (i.e 1.11 mn t) of the offered quantity managed to receive bids. Vedanta remained the largest bidder in the auction at 0.49 mn t, followed by VM Salgaocar and Brother Private Limited at 0.14 mn t, and Dhanlaxmi Enterprises at 0.12 mn t.
