Indian Iron Ore Movement Up by 18% in Oct’16

As per SteelMint’s analysis, iron ore movement across major producing states of the country was recorded at 12.5 MnT in Oct’16 against 10.6 MnT in Sept’16. The figure has been compiled on the basis of movements made via railways, trucks, Karnataka and Goa e-auction data and import data as per customs. The figure indicated does not include the captive iron ore movement of SAIL & Tata Steel and movement for exports.

State-wise iron ore movement analysis –

Iron ore dispatches from Odisha up by 21% – Iron ore dispatches from Odisha increased from 5.24 MnT in Sept’16 to 6.33 MnT in Oct’16. Dispatches from Rungta Mines increased by 31% M-o-M to 1.71 MnT in Oct’16. Iron ore dispatches of other major miners stood as follows: Serajuddin Mines (0.9 MnT) and KJS Ahluwalia (0.8 MnT).

Chhattisgarh iron ore movement increases in Oct – Increased iron ore sourcing of Vizag Steel and JSW Steel from NMDC, Chhattisgarh led to increased iron ore movement from Chhattisgarh last month. C.G. iron ore movement moved up from 1.6 MnT in Sept’16 to 1.8 MnT in Oct’16. C.G. based plants’ iron ore sourcing from NMDC remained stable on monthly premises.

Karnataka iron ore sales down by 27% M-o-M – Iron ore sales via Karnataka e-auctions stood at 1.9 MnT in Oct’16 compared 2.6 MnT in Sept’16. NMDC sold 1.2 MnT iron ore via Oct’16 e-auctions. Largest buyer – JSW Steel procured 1.34 MnT iron ore.

1.3 MnT iron ore sold through Oct’16 Goa e-auctions – Oct’16 witnessed two iron ore e-auctions. 1.3 MnT iron ore was allotted in total, out of which 70% was ROM. Vedanta emerged the largest bidder at 0.7 MnT followed by Kalinga Allied Industries at 0.3 MnT.

Iron ore import to India falls by 13% M-o-M – Indian iron ore import was recorded at 0.48 MnT in Oct’16 against 0.55 MnT in Sept’16. JSW steel was the largest importer at 0.33 MnT. Other two import vessels imported last month were of Gujarat based steel makers and of KIOCL. Pellet import to India remained nil last month.

Indian iron ore exports double in Oct’16 – Iron ore export from India which stood at 0.87 MnT in Sept’16 increased and was recorded at 1.6 MnT in Oct’16. Vedanta remained the largest exporter at 0.67 MnT followed by Fomento Resources at 0.32 MnT. NMDC exported 0.21 MnT iron ore in Oct’16.

Pellet exports from India fell marginally from 0.8 MnT in Sept’16 to 0.75 MnT in Oct’16. JSPL was the largest exporter at 0.2 MnT followed by BRPL and KIOCL.
