Indian Iron Ore Movement : FY17 Vs FY16

As per SteelMint’s analysis, iron ore movement across major producing states of the country was recorded at 123.29 MnT in FY17, up 21% Y-o-Y. The figure has been compiled on the basis of movements made via railways, trucks, Karnataka and Goa e-auction data and import data as per customs. The figure indicated does not include the captive iron ore movement of SAIL & Tata Steel and movement for exports.

State-wise iron ore movement analysis:

Odisha iron ore dispatches up 31% Y-o-Y in FY17 – Odisha iron ore dispatches increased 31% Y-o-Y from 48.80 MnT in FY16 to 63.89 MnT in FY17. Among Odisha’s merchant iron ore miners – Rungta Mines dispatched 16.75 MnT iron ore, up by 20% Y-o-Y, followed by Serajuddin Mines at 9.11 MnT and KJS Ahluwalia mines at 5.51 MnT in FY17. OMC dispatched 3.82 MnT iron ore in domestic market in FY17 compared to 3.03 MnT in previous fiscal.

Chhattisgarh iron ore movement increased 36% in FY17 – Iron ore movement from Chhattisgarh increased from 14.52 MnT in FY16 to 19.79 MnT in FY17. NMDC’s iron ore sales from Chhattisgarh mines increased significantly from 16.4 MnT in FY16 to 23 MnT in FY17.

Karnataka iron ore e-auction sales down 4% in FY17 – Iron ore sales via Karnataka e-auctions observed minute fall of 4% on yearly premises. Sales fell from 28.74 MnT in FY16 to 27.52 MnT in FY17. Out of 27.52 MnT iron ore sold in FY17 via Karnataka e-auctions, 12.6 MnT was sold by NMDC and rest by private mines. JSW Steel continues to remain the largest bidder at 19.3 MnT in FY17 followed by BMM Ispat & MSPL.

Iron ore & pellet imports to India at 6.13 MnT in FY17 – Iron ore imports to India remained stable on yearly premises. India imported 5.79 MnT iron ore in FY17 against 5.62 MnT in previous fiscal. JSW Steel was the largest iron ore importer in FY17 at 3.55 MnT. Pellet imports to India stood at 0.34 MnT in FY17 compared to 0.16 MnT in previous fiscal. Entire quantity of pellets imported to India in FY17 was by Essar Steel.

Indian iron ore & pellet exports jumped significantly in FY17 – India exported 24.35 MnT iron ore in FY17 against 6.04 MnT in FY16. Vedanta remained the largest exporter in FY17 at 7.32 MnT followed by Fomento Resources at 3.77 MnT and NMDC at 2.70 MnT.

Pellet exports from India which stood at 0.83 MnT in FY16 jumped to 8.26 MnT in FY17. JSPL remained the largest Indian pellet exporter in FY17 at 2.29 MnT followed by BRPL and Essar Steel.
