Indian Iron Ore Import at 433,700 MT in Feb’16

Iron ore import to India have fallen by 36% M-o-M in Feb’16 and were recorded at 433,700 MT in Feb’16. In Jan’16, Indian iron ore import was seen at 677,100 MT in Jan’16. Pellet import to India continue to remain nil in Feb’16.

Largest importer was Essar Steel at 175,200 MT followed by Kamachi and Pulkit Steel at 90,500 MT. Steel Exchange India, an Andhra Pradesh based steel maker with an installed capacity of 0.25 MnT pa imported iron ore for the first time.

All the import shipments registered last month were from South Africa and as per market participants majority of shipments were heard to be booked on index basis.

Indian iron ore import likely to be around 5.5 MnT in FY16

In this fiscal, India has imported 4.84 MnT iron ore by Feb’16. Considering the expected iron ore import shipments to arrive in this month Indian iron ore import may stand around 5.5 MnT in FY16.

As per customs data maintained with SteelMint, till date there are five iron ore import shipments (0.64 MnT) expected to arrive in Mar’16. Out of which major share (0.45 MnT) is of JSW Steel and remaining of Essar Steel and others.

Hence, iron ore import to India is likely to around 5.5 MnT in this fiscal contrary to 15.1 MnT in previous fiscal.
