Indian Iron Ore Exports Fall on Lowered Chinese Buying

Indian iron ore exports in Apr’20 were recorded at 1.63 MnT, according to data maintained with SteelMint. The exports witnessed 50% drop on monthly basis as against 3.25 MnT in Mar’20.

On yearly basis, iron ore exports picked up 15% as compared to 1.42 MnT in Apr’19.

China stood the only importer of Indian iron ore for the month at 1.63 MnT, down 46% as compared to 3.03 MnT in Mar’20. Indian iron ore exports have dropped for the month amid falling Chinese demand. The pandemic COVID-19 resulted in falling imports by Chinese mills rendering decline in Indian exports of iron ore.

Rungta iron ore exports moved down 45% in Apr’20
Rungta mines stood the largest iron ore exporter in Apr’20 at 0.38 MnT, down 45% against 0.69 MnT a month ago. SM Niryat stood second-largest exporter for the month at 0.32 MnT, followed by Vedanta at 0.17 MnT, and Kashvi Power at 0.16 MnT.

Port wise Indian iron ore exports
In Apr’20, Paradip port stood the largest exporter of Indian iron ore at 0.92 MnT, down 33% as compared to 1.38 MnT in Mar’20. Mormugao port stood second largest at 0.22 MnT, followed by Gopalpur at 0.17 MnT and Gangavaram at 0.14 MnT.

Outlook – It is expected that with miners actively clearing their stock, and resumed Chinese buying interest, Indian iron ore exports may increase in May’20.
