Indian Petcoke users are likely to see the benefits of using the fuel going away as the Government of India (GoI) is considering a proposal for banning usage of the fuel in the country on the ground of the polluting effects of the fuel.
According to the inputs received, the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change is mulling banning usage of Petcoke initially in the Delhi/NCR region on the basis of the recommendation of the Environmental Pollution Control Authority (EPCA), appointed by the Supreme Court. The EPCA recommended the ministry to ban usage of Petcoke and Furnace Oil to curb industrial pollution.
Petcoke is a mostly preferred fuel by the cement, power, textile, paper, chemicals, among others due to the relatively low cost in comparison with coal.
Moreover, the ban is also intended to restrict the bulky imports into the country. The EPCA believes the foreign Petcoke producers regard India as a dumping ground for the polluting fuel.
