India is among the top 5 largest coal producers in the world. The country had produced 641 MnT coal during FY17.
Indian coal production suffered set back during Apr’17, as total production stood 46.3 MnT, which was lower by 40% M-o-M compared with 77 MnT in Mar’17.
Moreover, coal production fell 4.7% Y-o-Y compared with 48.6 MnT in Apr’16, according to the data provided by Ministry of Mines.
The index of mineral production of mining and quarrying sector for Apr’17 was recorded at 99.9, was 4.2% higher as compared to the level in the month of Apr’16.
The total value of mineral production (excluding atomic & minor minerals) in the country during Apr’17 was INR 19350 crore. The contribution of Coal was the highest at INR 6424 crore. However, share of coal in total value of mineral production fell 25% M-o-M, from 44% in Mar’17 to 33% in Apr’17.
CIL Coal Production Down 42% M-o-M in Apr’17
CIL is the India’s major coal mining company which contributes around 80% of the country’s total coal production.
CIL failed to achieve its monthly production target for Apr’17, as it produced 38.4 MnT coal against the set target of 43.6 MnT in Apr’17.Monthly coal production fell by 42% M-o-M compared with 66.1 MnT produced during Mar’17.
SCCL Coal Production fell 37% M-o-M in Apr’17
SCCL, likewise CIL, failed to achieve its monthly coal production target of 5.1 MnT. The company produced 4.5 MnT in Apr’17, thus achieving only 88% of the set target.
Monthly production recorded significant downfall of 37% M-o-M compared with 7.18 MnT in Mar’17.
Lignite Production during Apr’17:
Lignite production fell by 9.09% M-o-M in Apr’17. India produced 5 MnT Lignite in Apr’17 against 5.5 MnT produced during Mar’17.
On the other hand, Production increased by whooping 153.5% Y-o-Y compared with around 2 MnT in Apr’16.
The contribution of Lignite in total value of mineral production during Apr’17 was INR 895 crore.
