Indian coal imports have fallen 7% Y-o-Y to 19.60 MnT in May’17, according to the data maintained by CoalMint Research. The country had imported 21.10 MnT coal in May’16.
On the monthly basis, Coal imports have increased by 2% compared with 19.26 MnT in Apr’17.
Still, Coal imports in 2017 have been lowered compared with that in 2016. During Jan’17-May’17, India has imported 87.08 MnT coal against 98.08 MnT coal imported during Jan’16-May’16, recording a decline of 11% on the yearly basis.
Grade-wise Coal Imports:
India mainly imports Non-coking coal which accounts for more than 70% of the total coal imports. Coking Coal, Met Coke, Pet coke and Anthracite comprise the remaining coal commodities imported by the country.
During May’17, Imports of Non-coking Coal, Pet Coke and Anthracite have fallen on the monthly basis while imports of Coking coal and Met Coke increased over the month.

Quantities in MnT
Major Exporting Countries:
Indonesia remained the top coal supplier to India during the month, however, monthly coal exports from Indonesia fell 5% to 8.86 MnT in May’17
South Africa, the second-largest exporter, supplied 3.46 MnT coal in May’17. Exports from Africa increased 11% M-o-M compared with 3.13 MnT in Apr’17. While on the yearly basis, exports have fallen 22% compared with 4.46 MnT in May’16.
Australia was the third-largest coal exporter. Coal exports increased by 4% M-o-M to 3 MnT in May’17 whereas exports were down by 21%Y-o-Y compared with 3.81 MnT in May’16.
Major Coal Handling Ports in May’17:
West Coast-based Mundra port handled the majority of coal shipments in May’17 followed by Paradip, Gangavaram and krishnapatnam port.
During the month, ports located in West Coast handled 9.95 MnT coal while East Coast ports received the remaining quantity of 9.65 MnT.

Quantities in MnT
Major Coal Receivers:
Adani Enterprise was the largest coal receiver in May’17, followed by JSW Steel, Adani Power, Coastal Gujarat Power and SAIL.
JSW Steel, second-largest coal receiver in May’17, acquired 1.2 MnT coal. The company was also the largest receiver of Met Coke and Anthracite coal. The company received 0.203 MnT Met Coke and 0.06 MnT of Anthracite coal shipment during the month.
Largest coking coal importer was SAIL, which received 0.85 MnT coal for its steel plants. While Shri Cement received largest Pet Coke shipment of 0.22 MnT during the month.
