Production of Chrome Ore and Chrome Concentrate in India has gone down by approximately 28% to approximately 2 MnT in FY15.
In FY14 India produced 2.8 MnT of Chrome Ore and Chrome Concentrate. However, in FY15 Indian production of Chrome Ore and concentrates is recorded at 2 MnT, with Odisha contributing to 99% of total production. This was mainly due to Tata Steel’s Chrome ore production in FY15 falling to 0.2 MnT, down by 76% Y-o-Y.
The lease validity for Tata Steel’s Chromite mine in Sukhinda valley had lapsed and mining was stopped on 17th May 2014, and started operations again on 22nd January 2015 after receiving 3rd Lease Renewal from the Odisha Government.In FY14 Tata Steel produced 0.83 MnT – almost one-third of India’s total Chrome Ore production.
In another development, Balasore Alloys acquired Rohit Ferro Tech’s Jajpur (Odisha) unit and aimed to ramp up its production capacity to 250,000 MT pa by the end of FY15.The company has captive Chromite ore mines in Sukinda Valley at Jajpur (Odisha). The mines take care of Chrome ore requirement of the company. Balasore Alloys is one of the very few Ferro Alloys manufacturing companies in the country having captive mines. This is a major competitive advantage to Balasore Alloys, since availability of Chrome ore is very uncertain and the price is also exorbitant.
Indian Exports & Imports
Indian Chrome ore imports remained stagnant, which was recorded at 190,000 MT during first nine months of financial year 2015 (April- Dec’14) against 260,000 MT in FY 14. On the contrary Indian Chrome ore exports fell sharply, which was recorded at 25,000 MT during April-Dec’14 against 195,000 MT in FY14.
