Indian Chrome Ore Production Dips Substantially in Jul’18

Odisha contributes almost entirely towards chrome ore production in India. Chrome ore production in Odisha has been recorded at 292,842 MT in Jul’18. It is about 30% lower than the production witnessed in Jun’18.

Production level by captive miners went down by 39% M-o-M. All the captive miners have witnessed a fall in their production with IMFA and IDCOL recording the largest cut in production by 79% and 73% M-o-M respectively. Balasore Alloys and Tata Steel witnessed a fall of 32% and 18% M-o-M, while FACOR cut its production by mere 4%.

OMC and B.C. Mohanthy & Sons also witnessed a fall in their production level by 3% M-o-M each. Saurabhil Chromite Mines, on the other hand, did not produce in Jul’18.

The fall in Chrome Ore production can be attributed to the rainy season which makes it difficult for mining activity as the mines are water-logged. Moreover, low demand and prices of Ferro Chrome could be another factor for low Chrome Ore production.
