  • G11 grade coal accounts for 74% volumes
  • Ukani mine anchors auction catalogue

Western Coalfields Ltd. (WCL) has notified 807,000 t of non-coking coal under the CIL e-Auction Scheme 2022 (Single Window Mode Agnostic) for auctions scheduled on 5 Aug’26. The catalogue is dominated by G11-grade coal, followed by sizeable G10 offerings, while G7, G8, G9 and mixed-grade coal account for the remaining volumes. Road dispatch constitutes the bulk of the offering, with limited rail-linked quantities available through Wani Siding, Ballarpur CHP, Ghugus New Siding, Dumrikhurd Siding and EDC Siding, providing logistical flexibility to consumers.

G11 coal accounts for largest share

G11 remains the dominant grade in WCL’s latest auction, supported by large open-cast and mixed-grade clusters.

Ukani has notified the largest quantity of 404,000 t of G11 Cr. ROM (-100 mm) coal, comprising 400,000 t through road dispatch and 4,000 t through Wani Siding (rail). The representative notified price stands at INR 5,392/t for road supplies and INR 5,302/t for rail dispatch.

The representative notified price is INR 1,960/t for road dispatch and INR 1,870/t for rail supplies. The rail lot is sourced primarily from the Sasti mine, with limited blending from Ballarpur mine and Ballarpur underground mine.

Mixed-grade clusters also contribute significant G11 availability. G7 premium coal available from underground operations

G7-grade coal forms a relatively small share of the catalogue but offers premium underground material.

Nehariya UG has notified 9,000 t, comprising 5,000 t of G7 steam coal through road dispatch at INR 3,380/t and 4,000 t through EDC Siding (rail), where supplies are blended with G8 coal from Vishnupuri-II UG at INR 2,768/t.

Mixed-grade underground coal broadens product portfolio

WCL has also included a few smaller mixed-grade underground lots. Bahandewada Incline UG (Rajur) has notified 4,000 t of G9-G10 mixed coal through road dispatch at INR 2,416/t, while Durgapur Rayatwari (DRC) has offered 2,000 t of G8-G10 mixed coal through road mode at INR 2,787/t. Saoner has also notified 1,000 t of G8-G10 mixed coal at INR 2,807/t.

Road dispatch remains the preferred mode

Road dispatch accounts for the overwhelming majority of WCL’s 807,000 t offering, while only limited quantities are available through Wani Siding, Ballarpur CHP, Ghugus New Siding, Dumrikhurd Siding and EDC Siding. The large G11 volumes from Ukani, supported by sizeable G10 and mixed-grade offerings from Penganga OCM, Gondegaon, Bhanegaon OCM and Gouri-Pauni Expansion, provide a diversified supply basket for power, sponge iron and industrial consumers.

Outlook

WCL’s latest auction is centred on abundant G11 availability, complemented by competitive G10 and mid-grade G8-G9 offerings. The diverse mix of open-cast, underground and mixed-grade coal is expected to attract a broad range of consumers. With domestic coal availability remaining comfortable during the monsoon season, buying is likely to remain need-based, while bidding behaviour for the premium-priced Ukani Cost Plus material and competitively priced blended clusters will be closely watched as indicators of market sentiment.
