Washed coal yielded from existing non-coking coal washeries across India was recorded at 49.63 MnT in FY19. The information was provided by Coal Minister Mr Pralhad Joshi while replying to a question in the parliament.
It was enlightened that a total of 22 non-coking coal washeries having a combined capacity of 116.69 MnTPA were functional during the fiscal, wherein share from the private sector washeries was predominant.
Notably, only 4 washeries were operating under CIL by its subsidiaries CCL and NCL, whereas the remaining washeries were installed under the private sector.
Capacity utilization of a washery generally depends on various governing factors, such as plant efficiency, market demand, coal availability, cost of washing etc. Consequently, non-coking coal washeries in the private sector are mainly utilized by the consumers having linkage with CIL.
Private sector washeries had accounted nearly 81% of the total washed coal in FY19, and had managed 79% capacity utilization as it generated 40.17 MnT washed coal from the 50.91 MnT raw coal that was supplied in the period.
Washed coal output from CIL’s washeries was marked 9.46 MnT in FY19, but had managed a better capacity utilization of 93% comparable to the private sector washeries.
