India: Two new coal mines named Garjanbahal open cast project and Dulanga mine in Sundergarh district are set to mark their presence in the state of Odisha.
Garjanbahal open cast project of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd. (MCL) located in Sundargarh district has coal block reserve of 230 MnT with an annual production capacity of 13 MnT. The mine will be inaugurated along with the Jharsuguda-Sardega rail line.
Shri J P Singh, Director, Operations (Technical) said that, “along with Garjanbahal mine our 53.1 km long Jharsuguda-Sardega rail line constructed with an estimated investment of INR 1,124 Crores also inaugurated. After stabilisation of this line, it will be very easier to connect up to Pelma (Near Anuppur Railway Station). This line can be used for passenger traffic by the Indian Railways.”
“MLC also has a plan for doubling of this line to evacuate coal from Basundhara region. Total investment on the coal line is estimated at INR 2500 Crore. After commissioning of the second line, coal transportation capacity will be ramped up to 40 MnT from 13 MnT.” he added.
MCL is operating in Talcher Coalfield of Angul district, IB Valley Coalfield comprising of IB Field in Jharsuguda district and Basundhara Field in Sundargarh district. In the FY18, it has produced 143 MnT and target of coal production for this fiscal fixed by Government of India is 162.50 MnT.
Similarly, Dulanga Coal Mining Project of NTPC located in Hemgir Tehsil of Sundargarh district has also been started in Odisha. NTPC has stated in its annual report that it has started the mining operations from Dulanga on 28 Feb’18, prior to which peak coal production from this mine shall be 7 MnT per annum with working life of 24 years. This is the second mine of NTPC to be operational (after Pakri-Barwadih) and its first in state.
Coal produced from this mine shall be used in 1600MW Darlipali Super Thermal Power Plant (under construction) of NTPC in Sundargarh district of Odisha. Upfront amount of INR 28.62 Crores has been deposited by NTPC Limited with Government of Odisha for its Dulanga Coal Block as per allotment agreement.
Shri M P Sinha, Regional Executive Director (Eastern Region-II) of NTPC, “Dulanga Mine has block area of 6.54 Sq. km., Geological Reserves of 196 MnT and Mineable Reserves of 152 MnT and ultimate production capacity of 7MnTPA.”
In Odisha, NTPC has currently 3000MW Talcher Super Thermal and 460MW Talcher Thermal operating power stations in District Angul of Odisha. Further, 1600 MW Darlipali STPP is under construction and 1320 MW (2x660MW) Talcher Thermal Power Project Stage-III is also in pipeline.
