India to receive 1.22 mnt of coking coal by 28 June, stocks at Indian ports surge 9%

Coking coal

The highest quantity of coking coal will arrive from Australia, with Tata Steel and Steel Authority of India (SAIL) bringing in most highest volumes. In case of the US, SAIL will bring in the maximum quantity of 0.31 mnt.

Dhamra Port is to receive more than half of the expected quantity.

Met coke

About 54,600 t of met coke will arrive at Indian ports during the said period, with 35,000 t from Australia — imported by AMNS, and 19,600 t from China — by JSW Steel.

About 0.20 mnt of anthracite coal will arrive entirely from Russia. The importers include JSW Steel, Bhushan Power & Steel and JSPL.

India’s coking coal at  port stock

India’s coking coal stock at ports rose by 9% m-o-m to 4 mnt in the third week of May.  The stock went up owing to increase in coking coal imports during 1-15 May, up 24% m-o-m, at 3.15 mnt, according to CoalMint data.

Outlook

Indian imports of coking coal are likely to see a downtrend in the coming months after the Indian government’s decision to impose duty on steel exports.

On the other hand, met coke imports may see a rise as the Chinese had offered this material quite cheap in the last two weeks of May.
