Coal availability has become a major issue for the India thermal power stations as their stock dropped to a critical level.
98 thermal power plants of India are left with only 12 days Coal inventory at their plant on an average. As per their total capacity of 0.1 million Mega Watt, power stations required to maintain minimum stock of 22 days, reported by Ministry of Power on 25 Nov, 2013.
Almost 20 power plants inventory are at severe critical level, with only 4 days of coal stocks to fire in their plant. However 33 units have Coal stock of less than 7 days.
Indian power plants are going through with many constraints like less supply from Coal India Limited (CIL), logistic issue, less imports etc.
Plants which are going through less stocks like, Koderma Thermal Power Plant (1,000 MW), Jharkhand and Mahatma Gandhi Thermal Power Station (1,320 MW) have received less than 50% Coal supply from CIL.
Regarding the less supply of Coal by CIL to their customer, CIL official declined to talk on non supply issue. However, their production and supply are badly affected due to natural calamity which occurred in October and November (Phailin and Helan cyclones respectively).
CIL production has dropped in Eastern and Southern regions which is also a major reason of under supply of coal against the contracted supply quantity.
Raihand STPS (3,000 MW), Anpara C TPS (1,200 MW), Wardha Warora TPP (540 MW), Rayalaseema TPS (1,050 MW), Ramagundem STPS (2,600 MW), North Chennai TPS (1,830 MW), Mejia TPS (2,340 MW), Sagardighi TPS (600 MW), Santaldih TPS (980 MW) and Farakka STPS (2,100 MW) are the plants with less stocks due to low Coal imports.
