India’s steel major – Tata Steel flagged off 1st raw material consignment of ferrous scrap on 24th Jul’20 for trial at its set-to-start steel recycling plant in Rohtak, Haryana. This 0.5 mn t pa capacity scrap processing plant is being set up in order to streamline the currently unorganised scrap supply chain, making quality processed ferrous scrap available, reduce the dependency on imports and enhance the transparency and efficiency in the entire value chain.
The scrap would be procured from various market segments such as end of life vehicle scrap, obsolete household scrap, construction & demolition scrap, industrial scrap etc. This scrap would be processed through mechanised equipment and the high quality processed scrap would be supplied to electric arc furnaces (EAFs), induction furnaces (IFs) & foundries for downstream steel making, satiating their long-standing demand.
Steel recycling business is a green initiative by Tata Steel towards sustainable steel production and ecosystem which reduces the carbon emissions, lower resource consumption and energy utilisation. The BOO partner is M/s Aarti Green Tech Ltd, a subsidiary of M/s Aarti Steel Ltd. It is the first such type of facility in India and equipped with state-of-the-art processing equipment such as Shredder, Material Handler etc.
Yogesh Bedi, Chief (Steel Recycling Business), Tata Steel, said: “Steel Recycling through the Electric Arc Furnace route is a global trend and going forward would become imperative for India’s sustainable growth aspirations”.
The National Steel Policy envisages a 300 mn t pa steel production in India by FY30 and steel recycling will play a pivotal role in attaining this ambition.
National Steel Recycling policy mentioned that the efficient use of scrap for steel production becomes very crucial for India as 35-40% share has been envisaged from scrap-based steel production in the journey of 300 mn t pa by 2030. This shall increase requirement of steel scrap sharply from present level of around 30 mn t. Hence setting up of such scrap processing centers will lower dependence on imported scrap and boost domestic availability.
According to BIR, India reinforced its position as the world’s second-largest steel scrap importer with an 11.4% increase in its overseas steel scrap purchases to 7.05 mnt in CY’19.
