India: Tata Steel sees y-o-y rise in production, sales in Q1FY’25

Tata Steel today released its provisional production and sales figures for Q1 FY’25.

Production and sales overview

  • Tata Steel India: Crude steel production stood at 5.25 million tonnes (mnt), a 5% y-o-y increase, though lower than the previous quarter due to planned maintenance. Deliveries reached 4.94 mnt, marking the highest-ever for the first quarter.
  • Tata Steel Netherlands: Produced 1.72 mnt of liquid steel, reflecting an increase compared to the previous year and quarter. Deliveries were up 11% y-o-y and 6% q-o-q, totalling 1.52 mnt.
  • Tata Steel UK: Liquid steel production was at 0.68 mnt, with deliveries at 0.69 mnt. Operations ceased at blast furnace 5 at Port Talbot on July 4, 2024, with the facility being safely decommissioned.
  • Tata Steel Thailand: Production remained steady at 0.31 mnt, with deliveries at the same level.

Key segment highlights in India

  • Automotive & special products: Deliveries surged 14% y-o-y to approximately 0.8 mnt, driven by strong performance in the passenger and commercial vehicle segments.
  • Branded products & retail: Deliveries increased 6% y-o-y to around 1.7 mnt, led by the growth of well-established brands like Tata Tiscon, which saw a 15% rise.
  • Industrial products & projects: Delivered 1.8 mnt, with the engineering sub-segment achieving its best-ever quarterly sales.

Tata Steel Group is among the top global steel companies with a capacity of 35 mnt per annum, operating across five continents. The company recorded a turnover of $27.7 billion for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, and aims to achieve Net Zero by 2045.
