Coal sourcing of plants

Tata Power currently operates five coal-based power stations, namely Mundra, Trombay, Maithon, Jojobera and Prayagraj.

However, the company has been procuring imported coal particularly for its Mundra and Trombay facility, which are designed to run on imported coal.

The Mundra plant has imported 3.85 million tonnes (mnt) of coal during April-November, 2022, registering a growth of 50% against 2.56 mnt in April-November, 2021. The Trombay facility imported 1.71 mnt in the 8-month period, stable y-o-y, as per power ministry’s data.

On the other hand, no import has been recorded for the remaining domestic coal-based plants so far in the ongoing fiscal (FY’23).

Nevertheless, the domestic coal-based plants are expected to initiate imported coal procurement for blending purposes, in tandem with the government’s mandate, so as to maintain adequate inventory for the summer season.
