India’s stainless steel scrap imports stood at 98,865 tonnes (t) in September 2022, stable as against the volumes seen in August 2022, according to customs data.
Total imports from January to September 2022 stood at 888,506 t.
Series-wise imports
- 316 series stainless steel imports witnessed a rise in volumes by 6% at 12,274 t in September as against 11,593 in August, 2022.
- 300 series stainless steel import volumes stood at 80,307 t in September, rising by 5% as against 76,679 t in August.
- Notably, 200 series imports were at 6,976 t, down by 8% as against 7,601 t in the previous month.
- 400 series volumes stood at 8,948 t, down 17% as against 10,823 t in August.
- The most-traded 304 grade scrap imports increased by 13% to 46,783 t in September as against 41,509 t in August.
- 430 grade scrap imports decreased for the fourth consecutive month by 21% to 5,456 t in September as against 6,863 t in August.
- However, 201 grade scrap imports also decreased 13% m-o-m to 5,811 in September.

Country-wise breakup
USA largest exporter: USA was the largest exporter of stainless steel scrap to India in September at 13,874 t, a decrease of just 1% from 13,990 t in the previous month.
Thailand and South Korea were the other major exporters, at 8,471 t and 7,292 t, respectively.
South Korea exported 7,292 t in the month under review, while Vietnam and the UAE exported 5,866 t and 4,514 t, respectively.
