India: Short Term Power Transactions Up 14% Q-o-Q in Q2 CY19

Sales of electricity through short term contracts in India have been recorded at 35128.99 MU (Million Units) during the second-quarter of CY19 (Apr-Jun’19), as per the data provided by CERC.

Sales volumes had increased 14% Q-o-Q from 30775.58 MU noted in Q1 CY19, but were 2% down on the year from 35727.96 MU in Q2 CY18.

“Short-term transactions of electricity” refers to the contracts of less than one year period, for electricity transacted (inter-State) through inter-state trading licensees and directly by the distribution licensees, Power Exchanges, and Deviation Settlement Mechanism (DSM).

Although short term sales account for a smaller portion of the electricity supplied to the end-users, majority of which is contributed by the Power Purchase Agreement (PPAs). However, the spot sales enable distribution companies to balance short-term mismatches in demand and supply.

During Q2 CY19, sales volume through short-term transactions accounted for 10.38% of the total electricity generated to the tune of 338511.16 MU (excluding output from renewable and captive plants) in the period.

Sales of power through bilateral contracts noted at 17649.54 MU accounted for half of the traded volume, increasing both on the quarterly and yearly basis in the second quarter period.

Power exchanges constitute 34.21% of the sales volume followed by 15.55% through DSM.
