India sets up advisory panel to boost iron ore output amid rising demand

  • Govt sets up committee to boost iron ore, steel output
  • Committee comprises key ministries, PSUs, private steel majors

The government of India has constituted an Advisory Committee to recommend reforms aimed at accelerating domestic iron ore production. The decision follows a high-level stakeholder meeting on 26 August 2025, co-chaired by the Ministers of Commerce & Industry, Environment, and Coal & Mines, alongside senior state government officials and industry representatives.

The panel, chaired by Sanjay Lohiya, Additional Secretary, comprises key ministries, PSUs including NMDC, SAIL, OMC, and private majors JSW and JSPL. It is to meet fortnightly to address regulatory hurdles, improve centre-state coordination, and suggest measures to raise supply.

The move signals New Delhi’s intent to secure raw material availability as steel demand strengthens. Industry sources highlight that delays in approvals and clearances have constrained supply growth despite rising consumption. A more coordinated policy approach could accelerate mine expansions and stabilise domestic availability.

Points proposed:

  • Identify policy, regulatory, and operational bottlenecks affecting production and recommend necessary reforms.
  • Suggest measures to improve coordination among various Central and State agencies.
  • Recommend steps to increase iron ore production from CPSUs/PSUs such as NMDC, SAIL, OMC, and State PSUs.
  • Propose reforms to boost the overall production of iron ore and steel in the country.
  • Address any other issues related to enhancing the production of iron ore and steel.
  • The Committee will meet once every 15 days.
