India: SCCL Slips a Tad on Coal Production Target

Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL), the coal mining company operating in Telangana and jointly owned by the Government of Telangana and Government of India, has reported a coal production of 64.41 MnT during FY19.

In the process, the company continued the progressive growth in coal production on the yearly basis starting from FY15 and recorded highest growth rate in the past 3 years; but had failed to attain its annual target by a whisker.

SCCL’s coal production in FY19 grew 3.87% Y-o-Y from 62.01 MnT in FY18, but the output was slightly lower than its annual target of 65 MnT.

The coal company had witness subdued production in the final quarter of FY19, wherein production during each month had fallen on the y-o-y basis.

Notably, coal production in the month of Mar’19 recorded the heaviest y-o-y decline in the current fiscal, decreasing 12% to 6.37 MnT.

Area-wise Coal Production:

Of the total annual coal output, SCCL had procured 9.18 MnT coal from its underground projects while the remaining 55.23 MnT was attained from open cast projects in FY19.

Highest coal production was recorded at Kothagudem area, which also became the first to attain 10 MnT coal output during the year. Output at Kothagudem stood 26% higher on the year at 12.33 MnT in FY19.

Six mining areas had posted coal output in excess of 6 MnT in FY19; however, out of the total 11 areas, only 5 had recorded a rise in yearly output namely-Kothagudem, Yellandu, Srirampur, Mandamarri, and Adriyala.

SCCL Area-wise Coal Production

SCCL Attained Dispatch Target on Higher Rake Loading:

During FY19, SCCL attained its coal dispatch target of 67 MnT by supplying 67.67 MnT to the consuming sectors. Dispatch in FY19 was also 4.72% higher on the year from 64.62 MnT in FY18.

The target was achieved with the help of higher rake loading recorded during the year. As per the data provided by SCCL, the company had loaded 12,372 rakes of coal in total during FY19, which was 19% more than that recorded in FY18.

In fact, SCCL’s coal deliveries via Rail mode increased 16% Y-o-Y to 45.47 MnT, while deliveries via Road mode were down 21% Y-o-Y to 13.51 MnT in FY19.

SCCL, the second largest coal producing company in after CIL, is also responsible to meet the energy demand of the power sector. The company had supplied 12.95 MnT coal to NTPC during the fiscal year, accounting nearly 20% of the total volume in FY19.
