The Supreme Court’s decision on Coal blocks de-allocation is reserved in today’s hearing. The court has not given date to pass the order.
In last hearing on 01 Sep, 2014, the government has left the outlook of 218 Coal blocks on the Supreme Court, which was declared as illegal.
SC had adjourned the hearing for today in which the court has reserved the decision. This means judgment will be delivered on next hearing. Currently, the court has not given date for the next hearing.
Steel & Power producers are seeking for appointment for judicial commission. The panel will meet with producers to find the facts on Coal block allocation case.
The central government today again requested the SC to save 46 allocated Coal blocks, out of which 40 blocks are operational and another 6 blocks are ready to produce 50 MnT Coal in the current year. They also suggested for cancellation of non-operational blocks.
Out of 40 functional mines, two are allocated to an Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP), which have not been declared as illegal in judgment on 25 Aug, 2014.
India, which relies on Coal to generate over 65% of electricity, is currently combating with Coal shortage.
The central government fears that shutting down of these 40 Coal blocks could intensify the country’s power crisis caused by shortage of Coal.
