Bhubaneswar: The eyes of mining industry, union government, state government and the steel industry will be on the Supreme Court today as the apex court is slated to hear petitions of Goa Foundation to give an extension to Justice MB Shah Commission, the enquiry commission set up for investigation into mining scam in several states. Also, timeline the court has given to the Central Government to submit a copy of the Shah report ends today.
Meanwhile, the Central Government has already informed the court that another extension to Shah Commission is not required as commission has already given enough time to complete investigation. Also, in its submission the union government has it is not possible to submit a copy of report at the court before its affidavit in the parliament and any such act would be regarded as direct intervention in the parliament’s privilege and authority.
On 13 Jan 2014, the Supreme Court had directed Indian Government to submit the Shah Commission report on illegal mining in Odisha by 27Jan, 2014. The apex court had also directed the government to send copy of probe report to Central Empowered Committee (CEC). The Supreme Court had passed order after a plea by Goa Foundation that the commission should be granted one year extension to extend its investigations to other mineral bearing states like Jharkhand & Chhattisgarh.
