The raw material division (RMD) of Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) logged its highest ever production and despatch of iron ore at 21.46 million tonnes (MnT) and 20.91 MnT respectively in FY2019. The production figures marked a growth of 10.6 per cent and 9.8 per cent respectively over the corresponding period of 2017-18.
In FY 19, SAIL hiked crude steel production to 16.3 MnT. RMD mines, the major supplier of iron ore to SAIL’s steel plants in eastern sector of the country, expanded its production capacity to meet the enhanced demand of iron ore. During the period RMD recorded best ever iron ore lump production of 7.38 MnT and highest ever monthly production of 2.05 MnT.
With support of railways RMD despatched 5940 rakes which is the highest ever number. The rake availability plays critical role in evacuating iron ore at mines head and meeting the demand of steel plants on time. After modernisation RMD’s iron ore mines in Jharkhand and Odisha have average 18-19 rakes loading capacity per day. Less rake supply is slumping iron ore supply to steel plants. Crossing all hurdles, the RMD achieved highest average loading of 17.68 rakes in FY19.
