India: SAIL-BSP achieves new milestone in rail welding technology

Experts at SAIL’s Research and Development Centre for Iron and Steel (RDCIS) and SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) have developed a unique welding and post-weld-controlled cooling programme for nickel-chromium-copper, or NCC, grade rails. Developed under the government’s ‘Technology Mission on Rail Safety’ initiative, NCC rails are ideal for coastal and corrosion-prone regions. The sole producer of NCC rails in the world, SAIL-BSP is now in a position to supply such rails in 260-metre welded panel to the Indian Railways which was limited to 13 metres till now, SAIL sources informed.
