- Aluminium exports worth $7.6 bn impacted by US tariffs
- US set to collect $1.91 bn in duties from Indian exports
India has taken a strong stand in global trade by proposing retaliatory tariffs on US goods at the World Trade Organisation (WTO). This move primarily targets the 25% US tariffs on aluminium imports, alongside similar duties on steel, citing national security concerns.
The United States first imposed tariffs on Indian aluminium in 2018 and, in March 2025, raised the duty to a flat 25%, a move that India says severely impacts its aluminium industry and related exports.
According to India’s notification to the WTO, these US safeguard measures affect direct and derivative exports worth $7.6 billion, resulting in an estimated $1.91 billion in additional duties collected by the US.
India’s proposed suspension of concessions would lead to the collection of duties from US-origin products in an amount equivalent to the additional duties imposed by the United States on Indian exports.
