India: Private Firms gets Time for Coal Block Clearance

Private companies such as Essar Power, D B Power and Hindalco Industries got a major relief on Coal block allocation and another 10 companies gets time for clearance.

Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) is a body which suggests corrective measures for Coal block holders. It was formed by the government last year to review Coal blocks progress, allocated to firms for captive use and recommend action, including de-allocation.

The 26th meeting of IMG was held on 25 Feb, 2014 under the chairmanship of additional Secretary & Coal Ministry. In the meeting, the government decided to allow second stage of Forest Clearance to Essar Power and Hindalco Industries for their joint venture Mahan Coal Block. The group also recommended the same for Durgapur II/Sarya mine of DB Power in Chhattisgarh.

Mahan Coal is joint venture of Hindalco Industries & Essar Power at Singrauli fields in Madhya Pradesh.

On the other hand, IMG has also decided to give 9 months time to other 10 companies holding 8 Coal blocks to seek Stage-II Environment Clearance.

These companies include Jayaswal Neco, Tata Steel, Adhunik Thermal Energy, Abhijet Infrastructure, Usha Martin, Nilachal Iron & Power, Bajrang Ispat, JSPL, JSW and Bhushan Power & Steel.
