Indian power plant coal imports have increased 32% M-o-M to 5.173 MnT in Sep’17, according to the data provided by Central Electricity Authority (CEA). Declining coal stocks at the power stations could be attributed to the rise in imports.
As on 12 Oct’17, total coal stock at the power plants have reached 7.435 MnT enough for 5 days of power generation. Moreover, 28 power stations have a critical stock of less than 7 days available with them.
Adani Power (Mundra), Coastal Gujarat, Semb Corp Gayathri power, Coastal Energen and Thermal Powertech were the major coal receiving plants during the month.
Total coal imported by the power utilities stood 28.38 MnT during H1 FY18 (Apr’17-Sep’17).
Plant-wise Break-up of Coal Imports:
Out of the total coal imported during the month, power plants which run on domestic coal acquired 1.329 MnT coal for blending purpose, while plants based on imported coal acquired 3.844MnT.
Plants Designed on Domestic Coal:
Coal imported for blending purpose by power plants rose 37% M-o-M to 1.329 MnT in Sep’17 compared with 0.968 MnT in Aug’17.
No coal was imported by the Central sector power utilities during the month. Whereas, only Gujarat State Electricity Corp (GSECL) had imported coal in Sep’17 from the state sector. GSECL had acquired 0.044 MnT coal for its power plants.
Coal imported by Private sector power plants has increased by 36% M-o-M to 1.285 MnT in Sep’17 comparable to 0.947 MnT in Aug’17.
Plants Designed on Imported Coal:
Coal import from plants based on imported coal rose to the highest monthly total of 3.844 MnT for FY18, increasing 30% M-o-M in Sep’17.
Private sector power plants imports jumped 31% M-o-M to 3.78 MnT, while the remaining imports were made through Sikka power plant of state sector.
Coal Stock at Power Plants:
The decline in coal stock continued, as monthly closing stock in Sep’17 fell to their lowest level of 13.01 MnT for FY17, against an opening stock of 16.212 MnT.
Power plants total coal receipt had increased 6.08% M-o-M to 46.972 MnT, while monthly consumption was 50.421 MnT in Sep’17.
