Indian power plant coal imports have increased by 11% M-o-M to 5.331 MnT in May’17 compared with 4.798 MnT in Apr’17, according to the data provided by Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
Out of the total coal imported during the month, power plants which run on domestic coal acquired 1.568 MnT coal for blending purpose, while plants based on imported coal acquired 3.763 MnT.

Coal imported for blending purpose by power plants increased 45% M-o-M to 1.568 MnT in May’17 compared with 1.078 MnT in Apr’17.
Central Power Utilities imported 0.346 MnT and State utilities imported 0.461 MnT coal during the month.
Coal imported by Private sector power plants increased remarkably by 126% M-o-M, from 0.337 MnT in Apr’17 to 0.761 MnT in May’17. Moreover, the number of private plants that have imported coal has increased from 3 to 9 during the month.

Plants Designed on Imported Coal:
Coal imports from plants based on imported coal marginally increased from 3.72 MnT in Apr’17 to 3.763 MnT in May’17.
Private sector plants imported 3.617 MnT coal in May’17. Out of the total 11 private plants based on imported coal, Simhapuri Energy did not import any coal during the month while Ind Bharat’s Tuticorin Plant coal import data was not available.
In State sector, Sikka Power Station, located in Gujarat acquired 0.146 MnT coal for its 500 MW (2X250 MW) unit in May’17, down by 2% M-o-M.

Major Coal Importers:
Adani Power acquired majority of coal during the month for its Mundra and Uduppi power plants. However, Coal imports were down by 30% M-o-M to 1.09 MnT in May’17.
Coastal Gujarat, JSW Energy, TANGEDCO were among the other major coal importers during the month.

Coal Stock at Power Plants:
India’s power plant utilities recorded a coal stock of 21.806 MnT at the end of May’17 against an opening stock of 26.002 MnT during the start of the month.
The power utilities received 49.161 MnT coal from CIL/SCCL, Captive mining, E-auctions and coal imports in May’17 while consuming 53.246 MnT coal during the month.
