India: Power Stations’ Capacity Addition during Apr’17 Stood 2556 MW

India’s total installed capacity rose to 329204.53 MW with the commissioning of 9 new power units during Apr’17.

India added 2556 MW capacity of power units in Apr’17, out of which 6 units belongs to the coal-based power station with an installed capacity of 2440 MW and the remaining three units were from Hydropower sector.

Sector-wise Break-Up:
Two power plant units with installed capacity of 910 MW were added in the Central sector, with NTPC having a share in both these units.

NTPC begins commercial operations at Solapur power plant (660 MW) in Maharashtra. Moreover, Kanti Bijlii Utpadan Ltd (KBUNL), a joint venture between NTPC and Indian railways, commissioned second unit (250 MW) at Nabi Nagar Thermal plant in Bihar.

In Private sector, two coal-based power units were commissioned in Chhattisgarh and one in Maharashtra. Also, two hydropower plant units (2X48 MW) were added in Sikkim state.

In the State sector, a capacity of 680 MW was added in Apr’17. Rajasthan State Power Company, RUVNL commissioned 5th unit at Chhabra plant and New Umtru Hydropower station (20 MW) was started in Meghalaya.

Apart from commissioning of new power units, one coal-based power unit in Maharashtra has been withdrawn from the total installed capacity.

Fifth Unit (200 MW) at Koradi thermal plant which was commissioned by MAHAGENCO back in July 1978 has been retired from service.

Power Generation in Apr’17:
Thermal power generation (including Coal, Gas and Diesel) in Apr’17 stood 89.61 Billion Units (BU), as per the data collected from generation report of Power Ministry.

Power generation fell by 0.8% M-o-M compared with 90.33 BU in Mar’17.However, on the yearly basis, thermal power generation rose by 1.7% compared with 88.11 BU in Apr’16.

Total Conventional power generation which includes thermal, hydro, nuclear and electricity imported from Bhutan, stood 103.23 BU in Apr’17.
