Indian power generation from conventional sources has attained the monthly target set for Jun’19, as per the tentative data provided by Power Ministry.
Conventional sources comprising of thermal, nuclear and hydro plants along with electricity imported from Bhutan, had recorded 112.83 BU (Billion Units) power output as against the set target of 112.32 BU in Jun’19. Notably, the set target was in line with the scheduled annual generation program set for the FY20.
Continuing the steady growth, power generation had reported an increase of 8% Y-o-Y from 104.02 BU in Jun’18, but had come down 4% on the month from 117.05 BU in May’19.
During the first quarter of FY20 (Apr’19-Jun’19), power output from conventional sources have totaled 339.14 BU, up 6% Y-o-Y compared with 318.98 BU recorded in Q1 FY19.
Source-wise Power Generation:
Output from thermal plants rose 9% Y-o-Y to 94.19 BU in Jun’19 compared with 86.87 BU in Jun’18, and was almost close to its monthly target of 94.43 BU.
Hydro power generation continued its rising trend in Jun’19, was marked at 14.39 BU. There was an significant upsurge noted in nuclear power generation, which had attained a 17-month high total of 3.90 BU during Jun’19.
Electricity imported from Bhutan was recorded at 0.35 BU in Jun’19, down 32% Y-o-Y from 0.51 BU in Jun’18. Apparently, it was the sole contributor in net power generation whose output had missed monthly target for Jun’19.
| Source | Generation Target for Jun’19 | Generation in Jun’19 | Generation in Jun’18 | Y-o-Y Change |
| Thermal | 94.43 | 94.19 | 86.67 | 9% |
| Hydro* | 14.18 | 14.39 | 13.34 | 8% |

Power Generation from Coal-fired Plants:
Coal-fired plants had produced 87.38 BU power during Jun’19, up 10% Y-o-Y from 79.8 BU in Jun’18, but down 5% M-o-M from 91.647 BU in May’19.
As per the data provided by CEA, coal stock at power plants (having coal linkages) was assessed at 26.09 MnT as on 4 Jul’19 sufficient for 15 days of power generation. Stock levels have decreased 8% on the month from 28.42 MnT recorded in the month-ago date.
Coal consumption at the plants is likely to fall down from current levels following higher availability of hydro power amid monsoon rains.
