Conventional power generation have increased 5% on the year to 116.747 Billion Units in May’19 as against 111.071 BU in May’18, as per the tentative report provided by Power ministry. Power output was also 7% higher on the month from 109.26 BU in Apr’19.
Conventional power includes power generation from thermal, hydro & nuclear plants plus electricity imported from Bhutan.
During May’19, Scorching summer demand had witness higher power output than the respective monthly targets from all the sources except-thermal plants.
A source-wise break up indicates that thermal power generation had up tick 2% Y-o-Y to 98.66 BU in May’19, also rising 4% M-o-M from 94.66 BU in Apr’19; but were marked lower than its monthly target of 103.57 BU.
Hydro power generation reported a fresh 8-month high total of 14.079 BU, while attaining its monthly target of 12.98 BU during May’19. Output from hydro plants increased 32% Y-o-Y from 10.679 BU in May’18.
Nuclear power output was marked 15% higher on the year at 3.655 BU in May’19, compared with 3.187 BU in May’18. Remaining quantity of 0.353 BU was imported from Bhutan.

Power Plant Coal Stock Position:
As per the data provided by CEA, combined coal stock at plants (having coal linkages) was assessed at 27.97 MnT as on 6 Jun’19, sufficient from 15 days of power generation.
Amid higher coal burning during summer, stock levels have declined 13% from the month-ago date noted at 31.98 MnT as on 6 May’19, wherein the reserves were sufficient for 18 days of power generation.
It is to be noted that power output from coal-fired plants had gone up by 4% M-o-M to 91.48 BU in May’19 against 87.568 BU in Apr’19.
