India: Power, coal sector PSUs ink deals with Rajasthan govt for thermal, renewable projects

NTPC Ltd, its subsidiary NTPC Green Energy, Coal India, and NLC India have each signed separate Memoranda of Understandings (MoUs) with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (RVUNL) for the establishment of both thermal and renewable energy projects.

The MoU between NTPC and RVUNL aims to explore opportunities for incorporating supercritical units into the existing Chhabra thermal power plant. The collaboration seeks to implement measures enhancing efficiency and reducing generation costs for the plant’s existing units.

Additionally, the MoU between NTPC Green Energy Ltd and RVUNL focuses on developing renewable energy projects and green hydrogen derivatives, aiming for capacities up to 25 GW and 1 million tonnes (mnt), respectively, within the state.

NTPC’s strategic vision includes expanding its non-fossil fuel-based capacity to encompass 45-50% of its portfolio, with a planned 60 GW renewable energy capacity by 2032, forming part of a total portfolio of 130 GW.

Coal India Ltd’s agreements with RVUNL involve establishing various projects, including a 1,600 MW pit-head thermal power plant, 2,000 MW solar units, a 200 MW pump storage project at Jawahar Sagar, a 250 MW solar project at Banswara, and a 50 MW wind unit at the Ramgarh gas project in Jaisalmer.

Similarly, NLC India’s pact encompasses setting up a 125 MW lignite-based unit and a 1,000 MW solar power plant.
