Indian ports to receive 3.2 mn t of thermal coal by mid-Oct’21

A total volume of 3.2 million tonnes (mn t) of thermal coal is scheduled to arrive at various Indian ports by 15 Oct’21, CoalMint’s vessel line-up data (as on 24 Sept’21) reveals.

Imports from Indonesia continue to remain the highest, followed by Australia and South Africa.

With regard to vessels from Indonesia, the highest volume of 0.17 mn t is set to arrive for Adani Enterprise at Dahej Port, and Nayara Energy at Salay Port.

As for Australian coal, JSW Energy booked the highest volume of 0.27 mn t, coming in at Ennore, Jaigarh, and Mangalore ports, while 0.21 mn t is set to arrive for Adani Enterprise at Dahej and Krishnapatnam ports.

Interestingly 0.16 mn t is set to arrive at Kakinada and Karaikal ports from China and the buyer is Ramco Cement. Indian buyers were heard to have booked China reloaded Australian coal cargo due to its lower price against the direct offers from Australia on FOB basis.

However, as per latest updates, the old Australian coal cargoes not cleared by customs may no longer be offered for export from China as these are expected to be used in China’s power plants amid ongoing tightness in coal supply in that country.

IMR Resources and Adani Enterprise are set to bring 0.25 mn t each of South African coal at various ports, followed by 0.11 mn t by Friends Impex and 0.09 mn t by Swiss Singapore, CoalMint’s data shows.

Amid the sharp rise in thermal coal prices, vessel arrival from all these countries has registered a gradual decline over the last few months.

However, any sharp fall in shipments has also been limited due to an acute domestic coal supply shortage within the country.

The port is set to receive 0.16 mn t of thermal coal from South Africa, 0.12 mn t from the US, followed by 0.09 mn t from Australia, and 0.05 mn t from Indonesia.
