India: Pet coke sales edge up by 15%, y-o-y, to over 3 mnt in April-July 2022

Sales of petroleum coke (including fuel grade, anode grade and calcined petroleum coke) saw a moderate growth of 5% y-o-y at 860,000 tonnes (t) in July 2022. In the current financial year, sales during April-July witnessed growth of 15% y-o-y at 3.15 million tonnes (mnt).

State-wise pet coke sales

Rajasthan leads in domestic sales of pet coke followed by Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Rajasthan is the hub of many cement plants like UltraTech, ACC, Ambuja Cement, Shree Cement, etc. that are the primary consumers of pet coke products.

In the case of Odisha, sales increased by 156% y-o-y in July as the cement plants in the state stocked up ahead of a planned shutdown of the Paradip refinery in August.

Company-wise sales

The majority of refineries recorded a rise in domestic sales of petroleum coke products during July, as the country was slowly dealing with the COVID impact around same time last year.

Only Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) recorded a drop of 78% in domestic sales during July. This was because it consumed more in its gasification unit and released less pet coke for sale in the domestic market.

Outlook

As the monsoon comes to an end in different parts of the country, the construction industry is likely to resume operations soon, which is expected to result in increased demand for cement thereby keeping petroleum coke sales supported.
