India Pellet Exports Down 20% in Jan’20

According to data maintained with SteelMint, Indian pellet export volumes in Jan’20 recorded at 1.05 MnT, down 20% on monthly basis as against 1.31 MnT in Dec’19.On yearly basis, exports picked up slightly compared to 1.02 MnT in Jan’19.

Why Indian pellet export volumes dropped in Jan’20?

Reduced Chinese Demand:
The drop in exports is attributed to falling Chinese demand amid New Year Holiday’s which begun from 24th Jan’20 amid coronavirus outbreak in China. Also, the coronavirus breakout could delay the spring restart of construction projects and may pull down the exports further.

Indian pellet exports to China dropped 28% in Jan’20
China marked the largest importer of Indian pellets in Jan’20 at 0.90 MnT, contributing 85% of total export share for the month. Chinese imports dropped 28% for the month as against 1.25 MnT in Dec’19. South Korea marked second largest importer at 0.06 followed by Malaysia at 0.04 MnT.

BRPL Pellets exports down 14% in Jan’20
BRPL marked the largest Indian pellet exporter for the month at 0.29 MnT, down 14% compared to 0.34 MnT in Dec’19. KIOCL stood second largest exporter at 0.17 MnT (down23% M-o-M) followed by JSPL at 0.16 MnT (down 37% on monthly basis).

Paradip port pellet exports fell 29% in Jan’20:
Pellet exports from Paradip port recorded highest in Jan’20 at 0.34 MnT down 29% on monthly basis, followed by Dharma Port at 0.33 MnT (down 18% M-o-M), and Mangalore at 0.17 MnT (down 23%).
