India: Orissa to move SC against HC order on Posco

Thursday, October 07,

The Orissa Government will file a special leave petition in the Supreme Court later this month, against a high court order quashing the state’s recommendation to issue prospecting license (PL) in favour of Posco.

The high court order was against the Government’s plan to issue PL for the Khandadhar Iron-ore mines. “We will file a special leave petition in the Supreme Court by the third week of this month, challenging the order of the Orissa High Court rejecting recommendation of prospecting license in favour of Posco India,” secretary (Steel and Mines) Manoj Ahuja said.

In January 2009, the Government had recommended the Centre to grant Posco PL over 2,500 hectares of the Khandadhar mines.

With the high court directing the state government to reconsider the claims of previous applicants, it was left with no option but move the apex court.
