- Pune records the sharpest 61.5% w-o-w increase in arrivals
- Prices decline in six of seven markets, with Delhi the only exception
India’s onion arrivals across seven key markets rose 17.3% w-o-w to around 65,681 tonnes (t) in the week ended September 24, from around 55,985 t a week earlier. Arrivals increased in Vashi, Pune, Solapur, Delhi, Ahilyanagar, and Nashik, while Indore was the only market to record a decline. Prices weakened in six markets, with Delhi the only exception.
The increase in arrivals was driven by higher supplies across six of the seven tracked markets. The sharp rise in Pune, Solapur, and Delhi arrivals contributed significantly to the overall increase, while the relatively lower arrival base in the previous week also amplified the w-o-w growth rate.
Higher arrivals pressure prices.
Ahilyanagar arrivals rose 19.5% w-o-w to 11,332.9 t, while prices fell 8.6% to INR 4,515/qtl, marking the sharpest price decline among the tracked markets.
Pune recorded the sharpest increase in arrivals, rising 61.5% w-o-w to 9,453.5 t, while prices declined 4.8% to INR 4,675/qtl. Solapur arrivals climbed 40.7% to 11,638.7 t, while prices fell 4.1% to INR 4,890/qtl.
In Vashi, arrivals increased 9.9% w-o-w to 7,079.8 t, while prices declined 2.8% to INR 4,622/qtl. The increase in arrivals was partly amplified by the lower base in the previous week.
Delhi arrivals rose 36.4% to 5,440 t, while prices increased 2.3% to INR 4,870/qtl, making it the only tracked market to record a price increase.
Nashik arrivals increased 15.6% to 1,437.7 t, while prices declined 1.2% to INR 4,620/qtl. Indore was the only market where arrivals declined, falling 6.8% to 19,298.5 t, while prices eased 0.7% to INR 4,095/qtl.
Outlook
Onion prices are likely to remain under pressure if arrivals remain elevated, particularly in markets where supplies have increased sharply. Price direction in the near term will depend on the pace of arrivals and demand absorption across major consuming markets.
