Odisha, India’s top iron ore producing state, recorded merchant dispatches at 5.04 million tonnes (mnt) in Feb’22, down 12% m-o-m against 5.73 mnt in Jan’22. A few small merchant miners exhausted their (environmental clearances (ECs) for FY’22 which resulted in lower production, thereby lesser dispatches.
The total dispatch figure excludes movement for exports and from the captive mines of SAIL, Tata Steel, Prakash Industries, Sree Metaliks, AM/NS India, Kashvi International, Narbheram Power and Steel and JSW Steel’s Gonua and Narayanposhi iron ore mines.
Key highlights:
- JSW Steel recorded the highest dispatches at 1.10 mnt from its two merchant mines in Odisha in February. Dispatches decreased 24% m-o-m compared to 1.46 mnt in January.
- State-owned OMC inched up to 1.45 mnt compared to 1.43 mnt in January.
- Dispatches from Rungta stood at 1.05 mnt for the month, decreasing by 15% m-o-m against 1.24 mnt in January.
- Dispatches from Essel Mining decreased by 23% to 0.44 mnt in February compared to 0.57 mnt in January.
- Dispatch volumes from smaller merchant miners like Geetarani Mohanty, DR Patnaik and SN Mohanty fell on a m-o-m basis in Feb’22.

Captive mines are excluded in the figure of SAIL, Tata, Prakash Industries, Sree Metaliks, AM/NS India, Kashvi, Narbharem, JSW (Gonua & Narayanposhi)
