Odisha- India’s largest iron ore producing state recorded merchant iron ore dispatches at 53.25 mn t in FY’21, down by 40% against 89.08 mn t in FY’20. The figures exclude movements for export and dispatches from captive mines of SAIL, JSW (Gonua & Narayanposhi) & Tata Steel and include dispatches from Sarda Mines, JSW Steel (Jajang & Nuagaon) & AM/NS, India movements.
The decline in dispatches was primarily due to pandemic apart from the delay in the resumption of dispatches at auctioned mining leases due to statutory clearances, transport-related issues, pricing concerns, etc.
Key highlights
- Rungta mines recorded the highest dispatches at 9.28 mn t for the year, down by 60% against 23.34 mn t in FY’20.
- Sarda mines dispatches went up to 9.27 mn t in FY’21, as compared to 0.67 mn t in the CPLY. Seven iron ore miners, including Sarda mines, have been issued steep penalties for violating their EC limits on a pro-rata basis.
- OMC, the state-owned miner, recorded a 14% fall in dispatches to 8.96 mn t for FY’21 as against 10.37 mnt in FY’20.
- Dispatches of iron ore from Essel Mining were down by 10% to 5.15 mn t in FY’21, as compared to 5.71 mn t in FY’20.
- Dispatches from Serajuddin mines have come down sharply to 1.69 mn t, down 86% y-o-y due to stacking-related issues as against 11.8 mn t in the previous year (FY’20).

Outlook – With more auctioned mines turning operational, dispatches are expected to improve. However, the availability of higher-grade ore in Odisha continues to remain a concern.
