India: Odisha’s Iron Ore Production up marginally in Oct’14

  • Iron ore production in Odisha up by 350,000 MT in Oct’14 against Sep’14
  • SAIL’s Iron ore production at 0.5 MnT in Oct’14 against 0.1 MnT in Sep’14
  • Serajuddin Mines may get approval for extended EC of 15.15 MnT in December

Iron ore production in Odisha stood at about 3.16 MnT in October against 2.81 MnT in September. Slight increment was due to rise in SAIL’s production, according to provisional data maintained by Directorate of Mines, Odisha. In H1 FY15, Odisha’s Iron ore production was observed at 22-23 MnT.

Production has fallen drastically after the Supreme Court’s order of suspending mines running under 2nd deemed renewal, which accounted for 26 mines (including captive and merchant). Odisha government later issued an express order, which allowed captive miners like Tata & SAIL to resume their operations with condition that they have to get approvals within 6-months.

Recently, Tata Steel & Orissa Mining Corporation’s mines have been asked to stop operations, which failed to submit all the statutory clearances within time period given by the state government. However, SAIL managed to get the clearances and has also signed the mining lease with the state government.

Major mines that have been non-functional due to 2nd deemed renewal are KJS Ahluwalia, KN Ram, Kaypee Enterprises, Mesco, AMTC and Rungta. Total production of 18 mines, which fall under 2nd deemed renewal was around 18-19 MnT in FY14.

Also, Sharda Mines, which produced 7 MnT in FY14, is also non-operational since April, 2014 due to lack of Environmental Clearances.

According to industry sources, no pro-active steps have been taken by the state government for renewal of closed mines. Most of the participants believe that government is waiting for the Supreme Court’s direction on CEC report, which was submitted recently. If quick action is not taken on either liquidation of stock or renewing mines, situation will get very tough for Indian steelmakers.

Odisha is the largest Iron ore producing state, which contributed around 50% of India’s total production.

Imports may touch 11-12 MnT in FY15

India’s Iron ore imports have hit highest ever at 6.7 MnT in Apr’14-Nov’14 and may touch 11-12 MnT this fiscal year, according to SteelMint Stats.
