India: Odisha Iron Ore Production up Marginally in FY’18

1. Rungta Mines continues to remain largest producer at 25.25 MnT in FY18
2. Production from other key merchant miners – Serajuddin and Essel Mining remained low over illegal mining case
3. OMC’s iron ore production increased sharply in FY18

Odisha – India’s largest iron ore producing state has witnessed marginal increase in its yearly output in FY’18. According to the provisional data of Odisha govt. maintained by SteelMint, state’s production stood at 96.76 MnT in FY’18 as against 94.17 MnT in FY’17. The figures include material type – fines, lump and concentrate.

Rungta Mines- India’s largest private miner produced 25.25 MnT iron ore in FY’18, up 10% against 22.87 MnT in FY’17. Other major miners stood as follows: Tata Steel at 12.67 MnT (up 7% Y-o-Y), Serajuddin at 9.03 MnT (down 17% Y-o-Y) and SAIL at 7.23 MnT (up 4% Y-o-Y). Serajuddin mines and Essel Mining depicted a decline in yearly production owing to closure of mines for Jan’18 and most of Feb’18 over illegal mining case.

Iron ore production of state-owned miner, OMC marked significant rise in FY’18 against last fiscal.

In Mar’18, Odisha iron ore production recorded increase by 20% to 8.71 MnT as against 7.28 MnT in Feb’18. The increase in production is owing to major miners resuming operation after the payment of penalty amount by major miners – Serajuddin and Essel mining resumed in Feb’18.

However, the Y-o-Y production witnessed a decrease of 4% in Mar’18 as compared to Mar’17 at 9.04 MnT.

In Mar’18, Rungta mines produced 2.36 MnT iron ore, up 11% M-o-M as against 2.13 MnT in Feb’18. Other major miners included OMC at 1.23 MnT (up 34% M-o-M), followed by Tata at 1.16 MnT (up 5% M-o-M), Serajuddin at 0.78 MnT and SAIL at 0.73 MnT (up 11% M-o-M).

Production from Serajuddin and Essel mining witnessed a steep growth in Mar’18 .Serajuddin mines depicted production at 0.78 MnT in Mar’18 as against 0.03 MnT in Feb’18 and Essel Mining recorded more than three folds increase to 0.52 MnT in Mar’18 against 0.15 MnT in Feb’18.
