India: Odisha iron ore production picked up 15% in May’20

Odisha – India’s largest iron ore producing state recorded production at 6.18 mn t, up 15%, as against 5.37 mn t in Apr’20, according to the provisional data of Odisha Govt. maintained by SteelMint. The figures include the type of material – fines, lump, and concentrate.

*Tata Steel stood the largest iron ore producer for the month at 1.49 mn t, up 8% on a monthly basis as against 1.37 mn t in Apr’20.

*Sarda mines recorded production at 1.20 mn t for the month (May’20), up significantly against 0.54 mn t in Apr’20.

*OMC output recorded at 1.08 mn t, a rise of 18% as compared to 0.92 mn t in Apr’20.

*Rungta Mines – India’s largest private merchant miner produced 0.54 mn t iron ore in May’20. The production recorded an increase of 23% as compared to 0.44 mn t a month ago in Apr ’20.

Few major miners such as Serajuddin and Rungta mines (Jajang) whose leases expired by 31 Mar’20 halted their production. Stocks of high-grade ore have tightened in Odisha as successful bidders of auctioned mining leases are yet to start production. Some of the auctioned leases are tied up in litigation. Signing of a mining development plan and initial payment for acquisition of mining leases are likely to be completed in early July after which mining companies are expected to start operations.

Odisha’s Badampahar iron ore mine was put to auction yesterday (30th June’20). GM Iron and Steel bagged the mine at 95.15% premium, as per sources.
