India: Odisha Iron Ore Dispatches Fall 9% in Jan’18

With five iron ore mines including Serajuddin, Essel and MESCO asked to shut down operations following Supreme Court order on illegal mining, dispatches from state noticed a fall.

Odisha, India’s largest iron ore producing state recorded a decrease of 9% in iron ore dispatches in Jan’18 to 5.53 MnT against 6.06 MnT in Dec’17. However, the Y-o-Y dispatches recorded an increase of 7% in Jan’18 as against 5.06 MnT in Jan’17. The figures exclude movement for export and dispatches of captive miner- SAIL & Tata Steel.

During the first ten months of FY’18 (Apr-Jan), Odisha recorded an increase of 14% in iron ore dispatches to 58.42 MnT as against 51.36 MnT in the same period last year FY’17.

Five working iron ore mines including Serajuddin Mines, MESCO have gone out of operations as they failed to shell out the penalties mandated by the Supreme Court. Closure of these mines resulted in a deficit in iron ore dispatches from the states.

Among Odisha’s merchant iron ore miners – Rungta Mines dispatched the highest quantity of ore 2.10 MnT followed by Indrani Patnaik 0.71 MnT and OMC 0.68 MnT.

Rungta Mines – India’s largest private merchant miner’s, dispatches recorded an increase of 17% in its dispatches to 2.1 MnT in Jan’18 as compared to Dec’17 which was at 1.8 MnT.

Dispatches of iron ore from Indrani Patnaik has increased sharply of 92% M-o-M in Jan’18 at 0.71 MnT as against 0.37 MnT in Dec’17. Dispatches from KJS Ahluwalia recorded a marginal increase of 1% M-o-M in Jan’18 to 0.51 MnT as against 0.50 MnT in Dec’17.

Iron ore dispatches from state-owned miner- OMC were recorded at 0.68 MnT in Jan’18, registering an increase of 9% M-o-M as against 0.63 MnT in Dec’17.
