India: Odisha Government to discuss with 12 Miners Today; Eyes on Sarda Mines

Bhubaneswar: Odisha government will hold discussion with as many as 12 mining lease holders today, including the 11 mines the CEC had visited recently. With this discussion, the government will prepare its final response for its meeting with CEC on 22 & 23 Jul, 2014 in Delhi.

It is expected that Sarda mines may be called for the discussion today. A senior official at Steel & Mines department has indicated that the lessee may get an adverse remark in the CEC report on violation of the forest act.

Initially, the government had found that the lessee had set up a conveyer belt from its mines to a Pellet plant (of JSPL) at some distance downward of the mine head without getting the forest clearance, as the area ( where the conveyer belt was set up) comes under forest land.

The government had issued a show cause notice to the company. After getting the response, government ordered the company to dismantle the conveyer belt citing response was not satisfactory. However, after some days the same department allowed the company to run the belt. Sources said that CEC has put a question mark on this.
