India: NTPC clocks record annual power generation in FY22

India’s largest power company, NTPC Ltd, has registered the highest ever annual power generation from its standalone plants as well as those owned under the flagship of subsidiary and joint venture (JV) segments.

The company’s total power generation increased 15% y-o-y to 361 billion units (BU) in FY22 as against 314 BU in FY21, as per data provided by the company in its quarter results. The standalone generation was 299 BU in FY22, up 10% y-o-y from 271 BU in FY21.

It is important to note that NTPC Group (including subsidiaries and JVs) reported an installed power capacity of 68,962 mega-watt (MW) as on 31 March 2022, while capacity of its standalone plants stood at 54,597 MW.

Coal sourcing

Revival in power demand helped the company’s coal-fired stations achieve a plant load factor (PLF) of 70.74% which was comparatively higher than the national average of 58.76.% in FY22. The PLF was recorded at 66% in FY21.

In order to meet the requirement, the company’s coal sourcing jumped 15% y-o-y to 195.63 mnt in FY22, which was primarily met from domestic sources. This includes contribution to the tune of 13.61 mnt from the captive mines, rising 44% y-o-y.

However, there was a substantial jump in imports too, as it grew 168% y-o-y to 2.47 mnt in FY22 against 0.92 mnt in FY21.

Financial earnings

On consolidated basis, NTPC Group posted a turnover of INR 132,669 crore in FY22, while the total revenue in the period was INR 134,994 crore. Profit after tax (PAT) rose 13% y-o-y to INR 16,960 crore.

On standalone basis, total income was INR 120,042 crore in FY22 as against INR 103,552 crore in FY21. The company’s PAT improved to INR 16,111 crore in FY22, registering an increase of 17% y-o-y.
